Cost guide
How much does startup branding actually cost?
Short answer
Startup branding costs roughly $2,000–$10,000 with a freelancer, $20,000–$80,000 with an agency, and $180,000+ a year for an in-house lead. A brand subscription sits between them at about $5,000 a month, covering identity plus the site, deck and launch assets, and stopping when you stop.

The four routes and what they really cost
Prices vary by market, but the bands below hold across US and European startups in 2026.
- Freelancer, $2,000–$10,000: logo and basic system. Site, deck and assets usually cost extra and quality varies widely.
- Studio or agency, $20,000–$80,000: full identity, guidelines, sometimes the site. Eight to sixteen weeks, contract terms attached.
- In-house designer or brand lead, $180,000–$220,000 loaded: continuous capacity, three-month hiring cycle, equity and severance risk.
- Brand subscription, ~$5,000/month: identity, site, decks and launch assets in one queue, cancel when the work is done.
What drives the number
Scope drives cost more than craft does. An identity alone is a fraction of an identity plus a deployed website, an investor deck, key art, social systems and video. Most quotes look cheap because they cover the mark and nothing that uses it.
The second driver is iteration. Fixed-scope projects price two revision rounds; real early companies need ten, and the change orders are where budgets break.
What pre-seed and seed founders actually spend
In practice, pre-seed teams spend $5,000 to $15,000 total and prioritise the site and deck. Seed teams spend $15,000 to $40,000 and add a proper identity system and launch assets.
The most expensive path is the cheap one done twice: a $3,000 identity that has to be replaced eighteen months later, after it's been printed, coded and shipped everywhere.
How to decide
If you need one asset and never think about it again, hire a freelancer. If you're raising, launching or shipping continuously for the next few months, a monthly model costs less and moves faster. If you're at Series B with several markets to run, budget for an agency or a team.
